It is funny to think that "London's country estate" isn't actually in London at all. About 20 miles north in Hertfordshire would be more accurate. Despite the discrepancy over its exact location though, The Grove is a five-star one-stop shop for spa, golf, luxury accommodation and fine dining. Not to mention a bit of celeb spotting as the England football team stay here...heaven for wannabe WAG's.
Food wise - there are three restaurants, The Stables - an informal eatery offering hearty comfort food in the estate's old stable block, The Glasshouse - which serves an all you can eat buffet (in no way to be confused with certain pizza chains' £6 all you can eat menu) and Colette's, the estate's 3 AA Rosette fine dining room. All serve fantastic food in a beautiful setting, and having such a range means they are all perfect for different occasions.
Focussing on The Glasshouse. The price is a fixed £49, with which you are guaranteed as much great food as you can manage, at a reasonable price and a full-to-burst stomach on top.
The choice is enormous. For starters there is a seafood section with king prawns, sushi, ceviche, and potted shrimp to name a few, a tapas section with chorizo, stuffed peppers, quails eggs on salt beef stovies and Spanish omelette, not to mention a soup of the day and various cold salads. In the main courses area on Sundays, you can choose from a huge selection of roasts with all the trimmings. There is also an Asian stir fry section where the chef will prepare your choice of meat, vegetables and sauce in front of you.
If you can manage pudding, there is a cheese table with chutneys, figs and grapes to accompany the different cheeses, as well as a sweet section. The individual bread and butter puddings, crème brulees and chocolate gateau are all delicious but the piece de resistance is the massive chocolate fountain with all of its dunkable things, including brownies, marshmallows, strawberries and fudge.
After eating, if you can actually move, the grounds at The Grove are spectacular. The water features, acres of lawn and courtyard gardens are well worth a walk round. If you can't face moving, relax in one of the beautiful lounges until you do feel like eating again!
