Literally translated as Tower Bridge, the name of this fantastic French restaurant gives its location away. Situated right next to its namesake, with outside tables almost up to the river's edge and in a prime location for people watching, this is a stunning venue worth booking for the views and setting alone.
The food is another reason to visit however. Being French, you can expect a certain standard, (is there a bad French restaurant?) and it certainly does not disappoint. The starters include steak tartare, Hors d’oeuvre maison (a trio of mini fish dishes including smoked salmon blini, lobster salad, and a crab cocktail), foie gras or a half-dozen oysters.
For mains choose from, amongst other things, shoulder of lamb, fillet of sea trout each served with crushed potatoes, pork loin or tagliatelle with veal kidneys. For afters there is a good choice of naughty desserts including crepe suzette, chocolate and cherry mousse and a selection of French cheeses.
Particularly by night when Tower Bridge is floodlit, it is especially atmospheric to be dining al fresco. But if the weather doesn’t lend itself to that, inside the restaurant a pianist plays live jazz music to accompany your meal which also makes for a very nice ambiance.
One should be warned that this is not a cheap dining option! There is a fixed price of £44.50 for three courses which is quite reasonable given the quality of the food, but around half of the options have a supplement and the caviar starter even has a supplement of £45! There aren't many wines under £50 a bottle either, either (although the knowledgeable sommelier will take your budget into account), but if you are celebrating a special occasion or you do fancy splashing out, for the setting, impeccable service and food, it is certainly highly recommended.
Do tell the staff when booking if it is a special occasion, as they will make an effort to give you an outside table on a fine evening (normally first come, first served) and you may even be spoiled with a cupcake and candle.
