Chateau les Merles

“Les merles” is translated as “blackbirds” in English which is very appropriate due to fact the only sounds heard from here are those of blackbirds chirruping.

Bird song aside, the peace and quiet hits you as soon as you leave the main road and whilst journeying up the tree-lined drive you really can feel your cares melting away. Perhaps it is the fact you are right in the heart of the Bergerac wine region and the relaxing, warm and fuzzy feeling is absorbed osmotically. Or maybe it is the knowledge that a welcoming glass of fizz and plate of homemade canapés will greet you on arrival!

Chateau les Merles is a 15 room (including a 2 bed apartment and two 3 bed villas for greater privacy and space) manor house style boutique hotel originally dating back to 1677. With shuttered windows, a pretty hedged terrace housing the outdoor swimming pool and a stunning courtyard, it has bags of French charm and character, all packaged into a stylish retreat.

The rooms are all beautifully decorated with crisp white linens, polished wooden floorboards, and on peeling back the curtains, views of the pool with its sun beds and parasols, golf course or courtyard.

The hotel has its own organic garden and much of the ingredients for the restaurants are home grown. La Bruyere Blanche is the hotel’s gourmet restaurant and is surely a soon-to-be Michelin star contender. It also has a cosy bistro for more informal dining including international snacky bits like Indonesian pork skewers and Vietnamese spring rolls.

For the men folk/golf lovers, there is a 9 hole golf course that describes itself as “challenging” (read: “not for amateurs!) and a driving range. There is also a wellness centre and tennis court if golf isn’t your thing.

With Bergerac only 10 mins away and some of the regions finest vineyards on your doorstep, Chateau les Merles is perfectly placed to explore this part of the country. But then again, with the food, wine and beautiful surroundings here you may not want to venture out!

La Bruyere Blanche is closed in winter on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so plan around this, as you won’t want to miss out.
