La Villa Hotel

Piedmont is a region of Italy less well known than its more southerly neighbours like Tuscany or even Amalfi. But tourists’ unfamiliarity with the region is definitely any visitor’s gain. It is a stunning area in the north of the country from which on a clear day, you can see 100km across to the Alps.

La Villa Hotel enjoys such views too. This 17th century palazzo is perched high above the valley and the rolling countryside scenery is to die for. You will also not find a warmer welcome, from the glass of prosecco to greet you, to the moment you leave - so much so that you may forget this is a hotel and think you are with friends. The owners chat to you over breakfast and go out of their way to make sure you get as much as possible out of your stay.

Each of the 14 rooms in this gorgeous boutique hotel is individually decorated with period pieces and a mixture of styles, all found from mooching round local markets and antique shops. As a result there are roll top baths, chaise longues and some suites have an incredibly inviting four poster bed. The colour scheme is cool and peaceful with shades of white and creams on the walls and soft furnishings, and the floors are original terracotta flagstones.

La Vie is the guest-only restaurant where every night a 4-course traditional Italian meal awaits either indoors or in the courtyard outside weather-permitting.

Food is a very prevalent theme at La Villa, not only in the restaurant, but if you find you need something other than relaxing by the pool to pass the time, Piedmont is truly a foodie’s paradise. The homes of Gorgonzola and Asti Spumante are nearby and hunting for white truffles and wine tasting can be arranged. Even cookery classes including pasta making can be held on site. Be prepared to come home several pounds heavier!
